Key checks for accountant small businesses
- Check relevant experience and qualifications.
- Define bookkeeping, accounts and tax work separately.
- Ask who answers questions and how extra advice is charged.
Compare a written service schedule
Separate bookkeeping, annual accounts, tax work, payroll and advice so each proposal can be assessed against the same needs. Explain transaction volume and how records are prepared. Ask the accountant which work remains your responsibility and which deadlines require your input.
Agree how the relationship works
Identify the main contact, expected response arrangements and how extra advice is charged. Ask what happens during onboarding and if you later leave. A good fit should make record transfer, questions and scope changes understandable before the first reporting deadline.
