Removal companies normally assess how much needs to be moved, how far it is travelling and how difficult each property is to access. A move from a ground-floor flat with easy parking is very different from moving a large house with several flights of stairs.

The number of staff and size of vehicle required also matter. Larger moves may need additional movers or more than one vehicle, while smaller local moves can sometimes be charged by the hour.

A larger home usually means more furniture, appliances and boxes. This increases packing time, loading time, vehicle space and unloading time at the new property.

When asking for quotes, give removal companies an accurate description of the property and major items. Mention garages, loft contents, garden furniture and unusually heavy objects so the quote reflects the real job.

A local move may be priced using an hourly rate, particularly for a smaller property. Longer-distance moves are more likely to be quoted as a fixed price because fuel, driving time and the availability of the crew need to be factored in.

If your new property is a long distance away, check whether mileage, tolls, overnight stays or additional travel time are already included.

Professional packing can save a significant amount of time before moving day. A removal company may pack everything, provide a partial service for fragile items or simply supply boxes and materials.

Ask whether packing materials are included. Boxes, wardrobe cartons, tape, protective wrapping and specialist covers can sometimes be additional costs.

Difficult parking or a long distance between the van and the property can slow down loading. Stairs, narrow hallways and lifts can also increase the time needed.

If completion or key collection is delayed on moving day, some removal companies may charge waiting time. Ask about this in advance so you know how delays would be handled.

Some moves need temporary storage because the old and new properties are not available on the same day. Storage costs are normally separate from the main removal price.

Other optional services can include dismantling and rebuilding furniture, appliance handling, packing, unpacking and disposal of unwanted items.

A useful written quote should clearly explain the crew, vehicle, estimated duration, mileage or fixed move price, packing services and any additional charges that could apply.

Also ask about insurance arrangements, cancellation terms and what happens if the volume of belongings is significantly greater than originally described.
